This month brings with it a new Julián and Friends, highlighting the music of featured artists Vincent Davis and Corey Wilkes.
The Julián and Friends composers showcase, created to celebrate and serve as a platform for young composers-instrumentalists, is in its second year at the Jazz Showcase. Each monthly presentation seeks to expand the intergenerational conversation of Black American Music with experimental and forward thinking original programs.
Julián Pujols Quall
A Dominican-American pianist and composer based in Chicago and Baltimore, Julián´s journey started with the Caribbean rhythms of their childhood. A classically trained artist, their work found a home in jazz performance, improvisation, and collaboration.
Julián is a recent Jazz Performance graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, where they studied with Warren Wolf as a recipient of the Merit School of Music's Alice S. Pfaelzer Tuition-Free Conservatory Blue Ribbon Scholarship. As a solo pianist they have studied at the Aspen Music Festival, Gijón Piano Festival, Brevard Music Festival and Colburn Piano Festival.
As a founding member of the Peabody Improvisers Collective, Julián has been creating and performing improvisational music for ballet, modern and West-African dance programs for the last two years. In addition to Julián and Friends, they formed Mamey, a music project that seeks to deepen the understanding of the influence the Caribbean arts have had in their musical creative journey and to honor beautiful Dominican traditions and cultural resilience, as they strive to promote new and vibrant art.
Corey Wilkes
Corey Wilkes is a true multidisciplinary artist, celebrated not only for his jazz trumpet mastery but also for his achievements in music production, acting, and composition. He deftly amalgamates these talents, crafting innovative performances that interlace music, art, and culture, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. Beyond jazz, his collaborations with visual artists and DJs showcase a commitment to diverse creative exploration. Furthermore, Corey Wilkes is an Emmy Award-winning composer, underscoring his excellence in music production and his remarkable contributions to the artistic landscape, making him a versatile and influential figure in contemporary art.
Vincent Davis
Vincent Davis, born in Chicago is an internationally acclaimed jazz percussionist, composer and teacher. The seed of music was planted in Davis early, growing up in a home filled with the influences of rock, jazz and gospel. In 1979 Davis left Chicago to attend the Milwaukee Conservatory of Music, where his love of jazz and skill at drumming further bloomed and flourished. It was here that Davis met his mentor Manty Ellis. Davis trained and studied with Ellis, primarily focusing on Jazz trap drumming.
Since 1985, he has belonged to groups of Roscoe Mitchell as his Note Factory and its trio with Harrison Bankhead and Jaribu Shahid , with whom he also toured several times in Europe and Asia and performed at international festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival . He is also on Mitchell’s album Songs in the Wind and This Dance is for Steve McCall as well as sound recordings of Jodie Christian and Scott Fields and founded the ensemble Laws of Motion . He also starred with Matthew Shipp, Arthur Blythe, David Murray, Joseph Jarman, Marilyn Crispell, Von Freeman, Hamid Drake, Corey Wilkes, Ed Wilkerson and many other musicians.
